Derrick Rose Eyes Chicago Bulls Jersey Retirement
During a recent Chicago Bulls tribute, former MVP Derrick Rose revealed his aspiration to one day join the ranks of Bulls legends with his jersey hanging in the United Center rafters. The Chicago native, who spent eight seasons with his hometown team, expressed his heartfelt desire.
“I’d love to do it,” Rose shared, reflecting on his impactful career. “If they’re willing to do it, that would be a better fit for me.”
Since Rose’s trade to the New York Knicks in 2016, no other Bulls player has worn his iconic No. 1 jersey. The team previously saw players like Michael Carter-Williams and Anthony Morrow change their numbers following important fan backlash.
Rose’s legacy with the Bulls is undeniable. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft,he quickly ascended, winning rookie of the Year in 2008-09.Two seasons later, at just 22 years old, he became the youngest MVP in NBA history, leading the Bulls to a remarkable 62-win season and a deep playoff run.
However, a devastating left knee injury in the 2012 playoffs sidelined him for the entire 2012-13 season. While he returned and contributed substantially, including a memorable buzzer-beater against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2015 playoffs, he never quite reached the same All-Star heights.
Rose believes a jersey retirement would cement his place in basketball history, adding to the accolades he’s already received. Currently, the Bulls have retired only four jerseys: Jerry Sloan (No. 4), Bob Love (No. 10), Michael Jordan (No. 23), and Scottie Pippen (No. 33). Banners also honor former coach Phil Jackson and general manager Jerry Krause.
The upcoming 2024-25 NBA season promises excitement, with storylines like the LeBron and Bronny James father-son dynamic, the Curry-Thompson sibling rivalry, and the rise of stars like Anthony Edwards and Victor Wembanyama capturing attention. Today we welcome Kevin O’Neill, a basketball analyst specializing in Chicago Bulls history and player legacies.Kevin, thank you for joining us.
Kevin O’Neill: Thanks for having me, Emma.Always happy to talk Bulls basketball.
Emma: Derrick Rose recently shared his desire to have his jersey retired by the Bulls. What are your thoughts on that? Kevin O’Neill:
The question is whether his accomplishments and the legacy he built warrant that ultimate honor.
Emma: Can you elaborate on that? What factors shoudl be considered when a team decides to retire a jersey?
Kevin O’Neill:
There are several things teams typically weigh. Obviously, individual achievements like MVP awards, All-Star selections, and franchise records play a big role. But it goes beyond stats.
They look at the player’s overall impact on the team, their leadership, and the connection they built with fans.
Did they define an era for the franchise? Did they inspire a generation of young players? With Rose, there’s no doubt about the fans’ love for him and his impact on Chicago during those amazing years.
Emma: Rose, of course, battled some notable injuries during his tenure with the Bulls. Do you think that plays into the decision at all?
Kevin O’Neill: That’s a tough one. Injuries are part of the game, unfortunatly. What Derrick accomplished before those injuries, culminating in that MVP season, is truly remarkable.
You can’t deny the impact those injuries had on his career trajectory.Ultimately, the Bulls institution will have to weigh those factors carefully.
Emma: looking at the Bulls’ history, Rose would be joining some very elite company if his jersey where retired. What do you think his legacy ultimately will be within the franchise?
Kevin O’Neill:
I think, regardless of whether his jersey is retired or not, Derrick Rose will always be remembered as a true Bulls legend, a hometown hero who gave fans some unforgettable moments.
He energized the city and brought a sense of hope back to the franchise.
That’s a legacy that will endure regardless of what happens with the jersey retirement.
Emma: Well said, Kevin. Thanks so much for sharing your insights with us today.
Kevin O’neill: It was my pleasure.
