The United States firmly supports Romania’s entry into the Visa Waiver program, Dereck Hogan, an official of the US State Department, said on Tuesday. Being in Bucharest at the meeting of the Romania-US Strategic Dialogue, the American official stated that Romania must meet the standards regarding the transmission of information related to terrorism and the transfer of data, while the United States wants to improve the way information and visa requirements reach Romanians.

“The United States is committed to supporting Romania to join the visa program as soon as possible. (…) Various institutions from the two countries have been discussing for several months trying to outline what steps need to be taken in two areas: the first is related to the exchange of information in such a way that Romania meets all the requirements when it comes to the agreement on the exchange of information, data related to terrorism, the transfer of this data, and the Department of Internal Security and the Office of Counterterrorism in the Department of State work closely with the Government of Romania. The second area is related to the visa refusal rate which needs to decrease and in this matter we had a delegation that came last week to meet with all the relevant parties in the Government of Romania to discuss specifically what kind of information must be provided to Romanians by the Romanian authorities in order to fulfill all the requirements of the visa granting process. This cooperation continues,” said Hogan in a meeting with several journalists.

He mentioned that he discussed with Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă about the concrete actions that the Government of Romania can undertake in this matter and added that the Executive will give details. “We are satisfied with what we have managed to achieve so far and we are waiting to go further”, said Dereck Hogan, according to Agerpres.

The Principal Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of State within the Office of European and Eurasian Affairs of the US State Department, Dereck Hogan, and the State Secretary for Strategic Affairs within the MAE, Iulian Fota, coordinated, on Tuesday, a new round of the Strategic Dialogue Romania – USA.
