Derby in the Handball Bundesliga: THW Kiel welcomes SG Flensburg-Handewitt | NDR.de – Sports

As of: November 15, 2024 3:18 p.m

On Sunday the state derby will take place between THW Kiel and SG Flensburg-Handewitt. It is the 111th edition of the handball classic. But the Schnapszahl anniversary doesn’t promise too much happiness – the table situation in the Bundesliga alone ensures that. The NDR broadcasts live.

Given that they are three (Flensburg) and four minus points (Kiel) behind leaders MT Melsungen, neither team can afford any further slip-ups.

Two things are clear before the game in Kiel on Sunday (2 p.m., in the live stream on ndr.de and on NDR television): The already explosive duel will get an extra pinch of excitement. And: The loser must first lose contact with the top.

Last home derby for Kiels Duvnjak?

The national rivals have similar conditions before the encounter, as both have so far lagged behind their own expectations in the Bundesliga. Both had to release almost all of their players for national teams last week. And they were already fully challenged in the round of 16 of the DHB Cup on Wednesday.

The SG prevailed in the round of 16 in Hanover and took revenge for the defeat in the league. The “Zebras” beat the champions for the second time this season. more

The Flensburg team clearly held their own against TSV Hannover-Burgdorf (33:26), the Kiel team narrowly defeated the German champions SC Magdeburg with 29:28. Afterwards, the team and fans celebrated. “Oh, how beautiful that is,” rang out in the arena. “This club is always hungry for titles,” said Domagoj Duvnjak in this euphoric mood. It may be the last home derby for the THW leader. His contract expires at the end of the season.

“It doesn’t take much to bring 16 men down to 120 for this game, and every little thing is a little more important than usual.”

SG Spielmacher Jim Gottfridsson

For Jim Gottfridsson on the other hand – assuming there is no unexpected reunion in the European League – Sunday will be the last time he will sit in the Flensburg team bus heading to Kiel. “That’s why I’m not sad,” says the playmaker, who will move to Hungarian club SC Szeged in the summer.

Gottfridsson: “I really like winning in Kiel”

He adds with a determined smile. “I really enjoy winning in Kiel. For this game it doesn’t take much to bring 16 men down to 120, and every little thing is a little more important than usual.” In March, the Swede was one of the top performers in the 33:26 away win on the other fjord. Not a typical result, as Flensburg have only won eight times in Kiel in the last 40 years.

THW coach Jicha: We need “our best home performance of the season”

The THW is trying to use the second win of the season against Magdeburg – in the Bundesliga there were two away points at 29:24 – to gain positive momentum. On Wednesday evening, THW coach Filip Jicha said: “In four days there will be an even better game in which we have to show our best home performance of the season with energy and mental strength.”

However, the “Zebras” have had to nibble on the lack of consistency in recent weeks, which is made clear by the six minus points they have already accumulated in the Bundesliga. There is no question: the pressure to succeed is there.

Flensburg has everyone on board

But things are no different for Flensburg. “If you already have five bad ones, every game is important, then you can’t afford much more,” says SG coach Nicolej Krickau. He probably has all 15 professionals on board.

Captain Johannes Golla had to end the international match week early due to muscular problems, but was able to play again in Hanover. The only thing missing from the “Zebras” is the long-term injured Harald Reinkind (Achilles tendon).

The draw for the quarter-finals resulted in a duel with a top team for the SG in the next round after the duel with the “Recken”. The “Zebras” have home advantage again. more
