Derailment of Tram in Nice Caused by Collision with Drunk Driver – Man Arrested

The collision between the tram and a utility vehicle led to the derailment of a train on Monday January 15 around 10 p.m. in Nice.

The accident did not cause any injuries. But if the motorist escaped unharmed, he did not escape being placed in police custody.

According to the first elements collected by the national police, this man, aged 32, caused the accident by committing multiple offenses.

“He was driving very fast” at the wheel of a professional utility vehicle, reports the Alpes-Maritimes departmental public security directorate (DDSP 06).

While he was going up Boulevard du Mercantour towards Digne, he apparently ran a red light, before hitting a tram line 2 train, causing it to derail.

0.97 mg of alcohol per liter of exhaled air

The accident occurred at the Digue des Français, near the west depot of tram line 2. Its driver returned without any passengers on board. This thirty-year-old was not injured.

Given the nature of the alert, 17 firefighters nevertheless intervened with 5 engines. The Régie Lignes d’Azur has put the train back on the rails.

The national police arrested the motorist and took him into custody at the Auvare barracks. He is now being heard by the road affairs section of the departmental security.

According to DDSP 06, he was circulating with 0.97 mg of alcohol per liter of exhaled air. As a reminder, the legal limit is set at 0.25 mg.
