Messi, Lewandowski – or someone else?
The list of candidates for the world’s best footballer of the year, which includes 30 names, includes the “serial perpetrators” Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo also Italy’s euro hero Jorginho or Bayern goal machine Robert Lewandowski. In 2020, the Pole had to be satisfied with the FIFA award for the world’s best footballer after the much more important Ballon d’Or was not awarded for the first time since 1956 in the previous year.

Background: This is the Ballon d’Or
The Ballon d’Or is an award for the best male footballer of the current calendar year. The trophy has been awarded by the French football magazine “France Football” since 1956. Incidentally, the Ballon d’Or is sometimes confused with the FIFA World Cup. Both are independent award ceremonies that have nothing to do with each other.

This is how the winner is determined
The editors of “France Football” compile a list of 30 nominated players each year. This will then be submitted to selected journalists from all over the world for election. Each jury member then awards a total of five kicker points, descending from five to one counter. The player with the most points wins the Ballon d’Or in the end.
