Full support for Ukraine must continue. This was said by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Gabriel during the presentation of the priorities of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU today in Sofia by the Ambassador of Spain to our country, Alejandro Polanco Mata.
Gabriel stressed that during the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU there was progress on a number of important topics, with Ukraine remaining the main topic. It is indeed a very special moment when you take over the presidency, many documents should be completed, she pointed out, quoted by BTA.
We congratulate the choice of the Spanish Presidency for the motto – “Europe, closer” because it is very relevant, because Europe needs to get closer to its citizens and the opinion of the people. It is our ability to be flexible, to deal with crises, to solve everyday issues and to make policies that help people’s problems, as well as support for Ukraine, she gave as an example.
Sanchez’s visit to Kiev at the beginning of the presidency is a very strong signal that was sent to the whole world, Gabriel added. The Bulgarian government is adamant about supporting Ukraine and you can continue to count on our support. Russian aggression in Ukraine has an adverse effect on the security of Europe and we need to strengthen the capacity of the EU as well as for our own security, commented Gabriel.
In the words of the Deputy Prime Minister, we must also contribute to the prevention and resolution of the conflict.
We fully support the European future of the Western Balkans, Gabriel added. According to her, the support is a signal of Europe’s commitment, as well as of the results that citizens can benefit from.
Joining Schengen in 2023 remains Bulgaria’s main goal, Gabriel pointed out and thanked Spain for its support for our country.
Bulgaria welcomes the promotion of social and economic justice, she added.
