“Let’s keep the change” deputy Milen Mateev was caught behind the wheel of an unregistered car in Veliko Tarnovo. The case was confirmed by the Directorate of the Interior Ministry of the city.
On January 10, a police patrol stopped for an inspection on Bulgaria Blvd. in the old capital of Smart with temporary number plates.
Uniformed officers found an irregularity in the vehicle’s registration. Only later did they find out that the person behind the wheel was Milen Mateev, a deputy for “Continue the Change” and deputy chairman of the parliamentary legal affairs committee.
The elected official of the people was issued an act under the Road Traffic Act, which neither challenged nor flaunted his status.
He explained to the carabinieri that he had just bought the used minicar and that he would go to the traffic police to register it. They brought it to him from a car dealership in Varna on their own, he had temporary numbers, and Mateev decided that there were no obstacles to transfer to the point of registration.
Though a lawyer, he said he didn’t know that the temporary license plates could only be used by the company selling them.
That’s how he got into the confusing situation.
On Wednesday, Milen Mateev was unavailable for comment. He declined the calls, but told relatives that everything had been cleared up and the car was already registered.
