Deputy Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Dante Saksono Harbuwono confirmed that the average age of getting cancer is getting younger. Although he did not specify the shift in the age range exposed, Dante said that around a thousand cancer cases were reported every day in Indonesia.
“A thousand new cases per day are diagnosed with cancer. The ages are getting younger,” he said when met by detikcom at RSCM Kiara Monday (5/2/2024).
There are different types of cancer that mostly attack men or women. Men are more often reported to suffer from lung cancer to colon cancer.
Meanwhile, women are often found to suffer from cervical cancer and breast cancer.
“Several cancer problems, specifically the main cancer problems in women, are cervical cancer and breast cancer, while for men, it is colon cancer and lung cancer,” he continued in the Cancer Services Kick Off agenda.
“Cancer is a deadly disease, data from Globocan 2022 globally recorded 20 million new cases of cancer, almost 10 million cancer deaths. In Indonesia alone there will be more than 400 thousand cases of cancer in 2022. From a financial perspective, cancer is very expensive. big,” he said.
Therefore, the Indonesian Ministry of Health targets every province to have a main cancer service hospital capable of carrying out radiation therapy, advanced cancer surgery and chemotherapy.
This target is part of health transformation, especially the transformation of referral services. One of the programs in referral transformation is the hospital empowerment program which aims to increase the accessibility of referral services, increase capabilities and develop hospital human resources.
This program not only targets every province to have one main hospital that has cancer services, but also every district to have intermediate services. Intermediate hospitals, namely hospitals that are capable of basic tumor surgery and chemotherapy.
