Deputy Foreign Minister calls for multilateralism in the face of challenges posed by new technologies

SEOUL, 25 Feb. (Yonhap) – Second Deputy Foreign Minister Choi Jong-moon called for multilateral cooperation to address challenges related to new and emerging technologies as part of efforts to protect human rights, said announced this Thursday his ministry.

Choi made the call on Wednesday (Swiss time) during a video conference of the Alliance for Multilateralism, a forum launched in 2019 to strengthen relations between countries, as concerns mount that artificial intelligence and other digital technologies could infringe on privacy and other rights for which regulations and standards are lacking globally.

“Vice Minister Choi said that while there are both positive and negative aspects of digital technologies, close cooperation between the parties concerned is crucial to maximize the positive aspect of digital technologies that affect human rights. ‘Male,’ the ministry said in a press release.

Choi also underlined the importance of common responses to climate change and emerging and future pandemics as concerns persist around the weakening of multilateralism against a background of nationalism, anti-global sentiment and protectionism.

Choi participated in the forum on the sidelines of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s high-level segment online. This event saw the participation of representatives of nearly 30 countries and related international organizations.
