Deputy Chief Prosecutor Speaks Out on Explosive Interview with Chief Prosecutor Geshev

What I said, that Mr. Ivan Geshev’s family was in the car with him during the explosion, was provoked, precisely because he himself left such an impression on me in a telephone conversation, he says.

If Geshev had “the desire to clarify and correct my mistake, he could have done so the same day in his statement, which would have brought the necessary clarity and stopped and avoided manipulations on the subject, Sarafov claimed.

“I want to clearly express that both I and the majority of my colleagues believe that the prosecutor’s office should leave the political terrain where it has stepped deeply and return to its natural environment – in defense of justice only and only within the framework of the institutional and powers.” This is stated by the Director of the National Investigation Service and Deputy Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov in a position sent to BTA.

Sarafov points out that he wants to express his own point of view on issues relevant to society, provoked by the interview of the chief prosecutor Mr. Ivan Geshev on BNT.

“It is not my fault and I do not want to be responsible for other people’s sins, and in this sense what I said that Mr. Ivan Geshev’s family was in the car with him during the explosion was provoked, precisely because he he himself left such an impression on me in a telephone conversation,” says Sarafov.

He notes that if Geshev had “the desire to make a clarification and correct my mistake, he could have done so the same day in his statement, which would have brought the necessary clarity and stopped and avoided manipulations on the subject.” In the words of Sarafov, the silence of the chief prosecutor “gave occasion to provoke a sharp public discussion and free interpretations”.

“Why the chief prosecutor remained silent for a whole week, instead of giving the explanations due to the Bulgarian society and avoiding the discussion and politicization of this issue, is a question to which I have no answer. Subsequently, I myself, protecting the “honor of the Pagon”, as well as his and authority of the entire institution, I tried to be correct in my statements, but this obviously caused a political, and therefore also a media reaction towards me, for which I am not to blame, respectively, I do not wish to bear responsibility”, Sarafov points out.

In relation to the Israeli expert, the director of the National Investigation Service explains that he was brought by his deputy Yasen Todorov “by order of Mr. Geshev”.

“I don’t know him, I have no information about his name, official position and expertise, but following direct instructions, my fellow on-duty investigators and I admitted him to the scene of the accident, where he got acquainted on the spot with the circumstances surrounding the explosion, although he was not allowed to the seized physical evidence, but only made a visual inspection, after which he left with Mr. Todorov,” adds Deputy Chief Prosecutor Borislav Sarafov.
