MEXICO CITY, August 7, 2023.- Deputies of the PAN and the PRI demanded that the Federal Government apply only the vaccines against Covid-19 approved by the World Health Organization (WHO).
In a press release it was revealed that they also demanded a report on the availability of vaccines from the different authorized brands, in view of the upcoming winter season.
“We reject the promotion and administration of vaccines not supported by the health authorities, since there is no certainty regarding their ability to provide effective protection against the disease. In addition, the lack of thorough research could lead to unidentified or unreported side effects, posing a serious threat to public health,” they said in a statement.
They said that, according to the Covid-19 Mexico Weekly Technical Report, published on August 1, the Ministry of Health has warned of an increase in cases of infection by the coronavirus.
According to official data, to date there have been 7,649,199 confirmed cases, of which 4,444 are active. Unfortunately, the number of deaths amounts to 334,472.
Therefore, in view of the rebound in cases, despite the statements by the health authorities that minimize it, they considered it imperative that a vaccination plan be prepared and executed immediately.
“We must take the necessary provisions to cover the entire population that has not been immunized and those who require a booster dose, mainly girls and boys, applying only the vaccines authorized by the WHO,” they indicated.
They said that it is important to highlight that among the vaccines available for administration in the next vaccination campaign is Abdala, originally from Cuba; however, they asserted that it has not obtained WHO approval and information on dose availability remains unknown.
In addition, they commented, it seems that the nationally produced Patria vaccine will not yet be available, despite the President’s previous promise that it would be ready this season.
In that regard, they reiterated that without comprehensive clinical studies and scientifically sound data, no informed recommendations can be made on the use of these vaccines in different population groups, such as people with underlying medical conditions or pregnant women.
This, they noted, could increase mistrust of vaccination in general and have a negative impact on public health efforts to control the spread of disease.
“It is clear that the Federal Government has limited free access to vaccines against Covid-19, despite the fact that it is not certain that the Patria vaccine is ready or that the Cuban Abdala vaccine is validated by the WHO,” they pointed out.
They called on the Federal Government to stop monopolizing vaccines against Covid-19. “This centralist and authoritarian decision cost us lives, a terrible delay in vaccination coverage. Facilities must be provided so that federal entities and individuals can acquire the Covid-19 vaccines of their choice that are endorsed by the health authorities.
They accused that, from its initial stages, the health authorities have minimized the severity of the pandemic, which is clearly reflected in the persistent gap in vaccination.
For this reason, they emphasized, it is of the utmost importance to underline the need to guarantee the effective implementation of the next vaccination campaign starting next October, which, they said, implies ensuring an adequate supply of doses and allowing the population to choose the vaccine of your choice, as long as it is duly authorized by the WHO.
Today there are 10 vaccines against Covid-19 approved by the WHO for which it has issued recommendations for their use and which are produced by the following manufacturers: Pfizer/BioNTech, AstraZeneca/Oxford, Janssen, Moderna, Sinopharm, Sinovac, Bharat, Novavax, Casino and Valneva.
“As can be seen in this last note from the WHO, the Abdala vaccine is not on this list, so it is recommended that the health authorities analyze the feasibility of not applying it on the next day that begins in the month of October, to avoid possible adverse effects on the health of the population”, they insisted.
The statement is signed by the deputies of the PRI, Frinné Azuara Yarzábal, Mariana Erandu Nassar Piñeyro and Xavier González Zirión and of the PAN, Ector Jaime Ramírez Barba, Laura Barrera Fortoul and Leticia Zepeda Martínez.
