After hours of debate, the National Assembly adopted at first reading a change in the Preschool Education Act proposed by “Vazrazhdane”.
It prohibits the promotion and incitement in any way, directly or indirectly, of ideas or views related to non-traditional sexual orientation or determination of gender identity other than biological. The change also defines what non-traditional sexual orientation means.
The draft law was supported by 154 people’s representatives, 8 “against” and 9 “abstained”.
The leader of “Vazrazhdane” Kostadin Kostadinov and Yordan Tsonev from DPS defended the bill.
“This is an ideology, an anti-human ideology, to which we will now put a cross with this or several small texts in the law. We will nip it in the bud,” Kostadinov said.
Yordan Tsonev added: “And God created man in his own image… male and female he created them.” And this has nothing to do with tolerance for others. Whoever has a different sexual orientation has all the tolerance of society. But children are different – they must be left to develop according to God’s laws.”
Georgi Georgiev from GERB-SDS objected to the introduction of the definition, due to a contradiction, in his words, with a number of European documents and the Constitution of Bulgaria.
A definition that does not exist in any member state of the European Union (EU) is adopted, he explained, and requested that the text be dropped, which was rejected in the plenary hall vote and the definition of “non-traditional sexual orientation” remained in the law.
There has not been a single negative opinion on this part of the bill, explained the leader of “Vazrazhdane” Kostadin Kostadinov, who is one of the proponents.
