The three points were needed, not only for confidence, but to once again believe that they have what it takes to qualify for the play-off for promotion. On Saturday afternoon, at the Joaquín Muñoz García stadium, Deportes Santa Cruz remembered to win and did so against a direct rival, San Marcos de Arica.
However, the victory for the team managed by Hernán Peña was hard-fought, as the outsiders came to the area to get their own.
What’s more, the only goal of the game came in the second half. After an aerial ball into the Arica area, defender Diego González Torres headed the ball in to make the final score 1-0.
For the centre-back, it was his third goal in five games, as since arriving on loan from Cobreloa, he has become the most effective player for the Unionistas.
With this victory, Deportes Santa Cruz reached 28 points and got back into the fight to reach a spot in the post-season.
The next challenge will be at home again, as next Saturday they will host one of the strongest teams in the competition, Magallanes, a match scheduled for 3 p.m.
