The Cachapoal derby was expected to ignite the Second Division championship and so it did. General Velásquez, who had the opportunity to even reach the top of the table, could not beat Deportes Rengo and the visitors took the three points with a 0-4 win.
At the Augusto Rodríguez municipal stadium in San Vicente de Tagua Tagua, the team managed by Argentine Martín Garnero made it clear why they are the best visitors in the category, as they played a very good match.
In the 7th minute, Matías Recabal, the team’s creator, left injured and was replaced by the Argentine Jonathan Font, a change that was key in the game. The forward scored the opening goal in the 31st minute, with a tight header that left goalkeeper Brandón Obregón with no chance.
As the minutes went by, the visiting team became even more assertive on the pitch and overshadowed the home team, who saw Marcos Sebastián Pol score the 0-2 in the 56th minute. A header in front of the goalkeeper meant that Rengo began to solidify their victory.
What’s more, in the 86th minute, a penalty was converted into a goal by Pol himself, leaving a 0-3 scoreline that was already out of reach for General Velásquez, who during the year has been known for being powerful in their home.
And the rout was completed by full-back Jaime Soto (90’+3′), thus sealing the rout and the three points that left Deportes Rengo with 29 points, sharing fourth place with the Velasquinos.
REACTIONS
After the match, coach Martín Garnero said that “the classic has to be won, whatever it takes, and today it was our turn.”
The coach from Rengui said that “this is another step towards achieving our goal” and that “we are feeling calm about the result and satisfied with our performance.”
He also said that “the team responds as a visitor, so we have to do a more in-depth analysis and we have to have everyone’s collaboration to reach the final objective.”
For his part, forward Matías Meneses – on loan from O’Higgins – said that “we came to play our game, calmly, wait for the moments and we took advantage of the opportunity to score the goals.”
Finally, the man of the match, Marcos Sebastián Pol, commented that “I have to thank my teammates, I joined an extraordinary group. We all gave our best, I am happy because we won a difficult match, Velásquez is a strong team at home and we did things well.”
The forward, who scored two of the four goals in this classic, said that “the team today showed everything it wanted, the truth is that we have to take our hats off to those who were in, those who got in and those who were left out.”
He added that he “was looking for goals, he wanted them and he needed them” and that, looking ahead, “now we have to keep adding points and try to fight for something.”
It should be noted that the next challenge for both teams will be on matchday 18. General Velásquez will visit the leader Melipilla -on Saturday at 12 noon- and Deportes Rengo will host San Antonio Unido -on Sunday at noon- at the Guillermo Guzmán Díaz municipal stadium.
