Shared by three operators, this relay antenna will contribute to deploying 5G. The municipality will collect a monetary fee in return for the use of the public space. The Socialist Party is concerned about exposure to the airwaves and has opposed the project.

The subject is once again being debated at the municipal council. The installation of a relay antenna had already been recorded at the Léo-Lagrange stadium in April 2022. It is now the Pierre-Duboeuf stadium which is acclaimed by the mobile operator Free.
“Given the obligation of 5G coverage of the territory imposed by the State, telephone operators must extend their scope”, explains Emmanuel Maillet, Deputy for Economic Development and Digital.
An annual fee of €20,000

For the operation of a 140 m² space, an annual fee of €12,000 will be paid by Free to the City; for subletting the mast, Orange and Bouygues will each pay €4,000. The municipality should therefore receive €20,000 annually at least until 2035 since the agreement can be renewed after twelve years.
“Many children will be exposed”
According to Lucile Morel (PS), “Bron has enough relays”.
“It is in fact to cover Lyon that the operators have been eyeing the Duboeuf stadium for a very long time, next to the swimming pool and the Picasso college, where many children will therefore be exposed”, deplores the elected opposition member, who reject this project.
For François-Xavier Pénicaud, elected independent centrist, it is however a “necessary evil for economic development”.
“Our consumption is changing, so we have no choice,” says Marie Brunet, municipal councilor in charge of Nature.
Évelyne Brunet, Assistant for City Policy and Public Works, supports the “interest of going on 5G because these are smart antennas that transmit when there is a need and not all the time as do the 3G and 4G antennas”.

“If we don’t master the installation of relay antennas, operators will move towards private properties with much less security, monitoring and support,” warns Emmanuel Maillet. Residents of rue des Glycines faced this problem in 2016 and refused to allow an antenna to be installed on their building.
The environmentalist party abstained on this deliberation, in the absence of studies of exposure to the waves.
