Depletion of Gas Supplies in Wielkopolska Communes: Residents Fear Shortages by 2024

The inhabitants of Wielkopolska’s communes are supplied with gas by Anco through the distribution network it manages. However, it buys it from PGNiG (currently it belongs to the Orlen Group)who is also the owner of a local gas mine.

Earlier this year, Anco informed residents that due to the “limited availability potential of deposits” PGNiG has announced the need to end gas supplies by the end of 2024 at the latest.

Since then, residents live in fear that they will be deprived of gas. Their situation is complicated by the fact that the gas they use – i.e. from a local deposit belonging to Orlen – is nitrogen-rich gas, and high-methane gas is supplied to other Polish homes.

Gas supplies only until mid-2024

The problem of residents of Wielkopolska communes was recently described on Twitter by economist Rafał Mundry. His parents live in one of the communes concerned.

“The parents removed the tiled stove a year ago and made everything gas-powered. Now the gas supplier, PGNiG, informs that ‘due to the depletion of local gas deposits, deliveries may continue for several more months’, there will be a lack of continuity of gas supplies,” he wrote.

In an interview with us, he says that his parents were very concerned.

At the beginning of August, a meeting on this matter was held in the commune where they live. He also participated in envoy PiS Tomasz Ławniczak, who declared help. During the meeting Unfortunately, the residents received confirmation that Orlen provides gas supplies only until mid-2024.because the local deposit is exhausted. Therefore, the only way out of this situation may be to connect the inhabitants to the national gas network – explains Rafał Mundry.

He says the main problem right now is that you don’t know who’s going to do it. “Nobody wants to do that right now. In addition, the distance that separates the Anco-owned distribution network from the national one is at least several kilometers – says Mundry.

Soon with the inhabitants of the commune Another meeting is to be held, with a representative of Orlen. Residents hope that all doubts will be clarified.

The future of the residents depends on the plans of the local supplier

Will the residents of Wielkopolska communes really be deprived of gas supplies after 2024? To this question, Orlen replied that:

Depletion of the deposit does not necessarily mean that gas supplies will ceaseand recipients – forced to change the source of heat.

According to the concern, the future of the inhabitants and ensuring gas supplies to them will depend mainly on the plans and actions of the gas network operator, i.e. Anco. Orlen has no influence on the decisions made by this company.

It also explains that Anco received official confirmation from Orlen already in April last yearthat from October 2024 (i.e. at the end of the 2023/2024 gas year) it will not be possible to supply nitrogen-rich gas to the networks in the communes of Przygodzice and Sośnie.

Orlen also reminds that it previously indicated “the need to take action to ensure gas fuel supplies from other sources – e.g. from the high-methane gas network”.

“We are alone with this problem”

We wanted to hear from Anco about the situation the residents are facing. However, its representatives did not answer any of our questions. We also tried to contact Tomasz Ławniczak, a PiS MP, who declared help to the residents in this matter, but is on vacation.

Meanwhile, residents of Wielkopolanie are embittered by the whole situation.

We are alone with this problem. We are afraid that we will really be deprived of gas – says money.pl one of the people who participated in the meeting organized by the commune.

He adds that after that meeting, their situation has not cleared up at all.

The local government, however, has its hands tied, because the local gas network belongs to Anco.

– The situation is complicated by the fact that the network is adapted to high-methane gas supplied in the national network. Connecting residents who have so far used nitrogen gas will also involve high costs – says one of the municipal officials, who prefers to remain anonymous.

He adds that the information that reaches local government officials is “general” and does not explain anything.

No one wants to take on the costs that will have to be incurred. So we can only wait and hope that Anco and Orlen will come to an agreement on this matter, and time is running out – he emphasizes.

The deposits are exhausted. You have to look for new ones, and that costs money

How large are the present reserves of Polish gas deposits? According to the data of the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute, Poland currently has 305 documented deposits of natural gas. The total reserves amount to 141.9 billion cubic meters of gas, of which about 75 billion cubic meters are industrial raw materials.

Gas deposits are located in the foothills of the Carpathians and in the Polish Lowlands. There are more than 72 percent. mined resources. Small resources are also present in the Polish economic zone of the Baltic Sea.

Local gas resources, however, are quickly depleted, and the search for new ones requires significant financial outlays. Large amounts of money must be spent not only on new drillings and mines, but also on the modernization of the national transmission infrastructure.

Last year Orlen announced the discovery of two new gas sources in Wielkopolska, in the Nowe Miasto nad Warta commune and in the Czempiń commune. “Resources are located in Rotliegend geological formations, which for several years have been one of the main areas of the company’s exploration activities in western Poland,” the company said in a statement.

PGNiG estimates that the process of developing new deposits, after which their exploitation will start, will take about three years. The total extraction is to reach approx. 20 million cubic meters. annually. The discovered resources contain nitrogen-rich gas with a high methane content for this region of Poland.

At the beginning of this year, however state-owned company announced about the discovery of 500 million cubic meters. new natural gas resources near Biłgoraj in the Lublin region. The information was provided by Daniel Obajtek, President of Orlen.

Merger with PGNiG and further discoveries from native deposits will allow us to maintain our own gas production at a level close to 20% in the coming years. Poland’s annual demand,” he wrote on Twitter at the time.
