FC Barcelona did not let go of Memphis Depay. According to Sports world, the OL striker is still one of the players targeted by the club for the winter transfer window. The Dutch striker had been erected as Ronald Koeman’s priority this summer but the transfer fell apart due to the veto put by the Spanish League. The club wanted to separate from Ousmane Dembélé to make room for Depay. But the Frenchman stayed and the arrival of the former Manchester United player would have exceeded the salary cap at the club.
The agreement with Lyon therefore fell through but this could only be postponed. According to the Catalan daily, Barça intends to return to the charge this winter and bet on the advantageous contractual situation of Depay. The latter has only one year of contract and will be free to negotiate with the club of his choice in January. To avoid a free departure next summer, OL could then sell their player for a falling amount.
Barca are targeting two other players in the same situation: Spanish Manchester City defender Eric Garcia and Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum. The two were also part of the cases considered last summer. With limited means due to the health and financial crisis, Barça seems to have found a way to recruit at a lower cost.
