The 2019/20 World Cup in Alpine skiing continued with the men’s downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Thomas Dreßen from Germany won.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen – The cheers at the finish line knew no limits. Thomas Dreßen from Mittenwald won the downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and ensured the first German home win since 1992.

Thomas Dreßen is the king of Garmisch-Partenkirchen! The 26-year-old from neighboring Mittenwald won the men’s downhill on the legendary Kandahar on Saturday and ensured the first German downhill victory in Garmisch in 28 years. In 1992 Markus Wasmeier won in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

With thunderous cheers in the finish area, Dreßen triumphed ahead of Aleksander Aamodt Kilde from Norway and Johan Clarey from France. With start number 1, the German had started on the shortened track, made only one small mistake, but otherwise delivered a sparkling clean ride.

Departure in Garmisch: Dreßen has to tremble several times

Dreßen was celebrated at the finish, even if he did not yet know what his time was worth. The Norwegian Kilde became dangerous to the German, who was only 16 hundredths behind. Clarey was only a hundredth behind Kilde, Dreßen took several deep breaths.

Then the relief was great, the second win of the season in Dreessen is his first on home soil. The second best German was Josef Ferstl, who finished twelfth with his best result of the season.

Andreas Sander as 14th and Dominik Schwaiger as 17th completed a strong German team result. Peter Fill from Italy ended his career in Garmisch-Partenkirchen for health reasons and was celebrated at the finish after his 355th and last World Cup race. The South Tyrolean had nothing to do with the outcome of the race.

Departure in Garmisch: The ticker for the race

Update live ticker here

12:45: It is finished!!! Thomas Dreßen wins the downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and is the first German since Markus Wasmeier in 1992 to win the downhill in Garmisch. The audience rages.

12:41: A very big one says goodbye. Peter Fill contests his 355th and last race. The Italian has to end his career for health reasons. He does it without risk. It spins and is celebrated by the fans. Very emotional moments !!

12:39: Walder is far from Dreessen’s time. Now we wait for Peter Fill, who starts in three minutes. Then we can announce the victory.

12:37: Casse was good at the top, but then lost time. The victory of Dreessen takes shape.

12:35: It looks very, very good with a German victory. But nothing is over yet.

12:33: Mattia Casse from Italy, Christian Walder from Austria and Peter Fill, who is driving his last race, could still be dangerous for Dreßen.

12:31: Andreas Sander is in a good mood right now, does that continue here? Yes, it makes a good impression above. That could be a good result. Sander is in the top ten. But he is running out of strength downstairs, Sander is 14.

12:28: Schwaiger is at the front in the first split, but then comes a big gap. The pace is also missing, Dreessen was much faster there. Schwaiger finished 15th

12:26: Dominik Schwaiger and Andreas Sander are coming soon.

12:23: Dreßen really seems to be winning here. This is really a surprise after the disappointment in Kitzbühel.

12:21: The next German is at the top. Romed Baumann wants to confirm his good impression from Kitzbühel. He’s up there in terms of time, but that won’t be enough for the front. At the finish, Baumann is 15.

12:18: Christof Innerhofer can do the route in Garmisch. It will be dangerous again. The Italian is doing well upstairs. But then it’s not clean, Innerhofer won’t beat Dreßen. 13th place at the finish.

12:15: Thomas Dreßen is ahead, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde is second, Johann Clarey third. Josef Ferstl is in eleventh place.

12:12: The mood at the finish is breathtaking. The German fans create a powerful atmosphere here. No wonder Thomas Dreßen from the neighboring Mittenwald is in the lead on the downhill in Garmisch. Madness!

12:10: Thomas Dreßen’s victory is becoming more and more likely. Many potential winning drivers are no longer at the start here. Ryan Cochran Siegle from the United States has what it takes, but he doesn’t drive quite clean. Still, it’s a good run that ends in tenth place.

12:07: Now it’s getting dangerous again. Bryce Bennett from the USA is in great shape. It still fits upstairs, but he loses time in the middle section. It won’t be enough for threes. Bennett is at goal 13.

12:04: Ferstl is already behind, Dreessen’s time is probably not in danger. For Ferstl, it is still about a good result. Too bad, there are many hundredths below. Ferstl is tenth.

12:02: Jansrud starts with confidence. The Norwegian is up front. This is getting very dangerous now, Dreessen’s time is wobbling. Now he gets an ice sheet, that takes time. That doesn’t work out, he is half a second behind at the finish. Dreßen is still at the top here. Now comes Josef Ferstl.

11:59: Matthieu Baillet from France is an outsider. He is still up there, but then the gap adds up. Dreßen stays ahead, now comes the Super G winner from Kitzbühel, Kjetil Jansrud. It will be dangerous for threes.

11:56: Mauro Caviezel from Switzerland is a hot candidate for the top spots. He confirms that above, but then some time goes by. That is the ninth place in the finish.

11:54: Ten drivers are below. Thomas Dreßen leads in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and could be the first German to win here in 28 years. In 1992 Markus Wasmeier won the downhill in Garmisch.

11:52: Travis Ganong from the USA has also won here. In 2017 he was at the top of the podium. But today the ride is not clean, that’s not enough for the podium.

11:50: Now the fastest training Johan Clarey from France. It will be dangerous for threes. The fourth from Kitzbühel is in front, it is in a dazzling shape. But Dreßen shone down there, it gets very tight. Clarey is at the front, but he doesn’t finish. It’s insane, 18 hundredths back. Dreßen stays ahead of Kilde and Clarey.

11:48: The Austrian Otmar Striedinger is good at the top, but then leaves time in the middle sector. Seventh place at the finish line, no danger for threes.

11:45: Aleksander Aamodt Kilde won here in 2016. Today he makes a big mistake at the top, which could be expensive. But at the bottom the Norwegian ignites the turbo, where he drove even faster than Dreessen. He is only 16 hundredths back at the finish, Dreßen takes a deep breath.

11:43: Benjamin Thomsen from Canada does not matter, the time of Dreßen is not in danger. After six drivers it is already clear: Dreßen has shown a strong journey and has chances on the podium. Maybe even victory!

11:41: Oh, now the time is shaking from threes. Vincent Kriechmayr from Austria is lightning fast at the top. The lead is getting smaller, but it is still ahead. Now the bottom section. Dreßen was magical. Kriechmayr is 26 hundredths behind, Dreßen stays ahead. The audience rages.

11:38: Niels Hintermann is already back up there, he has to correct too often. It won’t be enough for threes. 0.39 back, that’s third place. Dreßen leads in front of Feuz.

11:36: Next up is the top favorite. Beat Feuz from Switzerland. Feuz is up front, but then also loses some time. Can he get that out below? No, the line is not clean. Feuz is 0.35 back, Dreessen ahead!

11:34: Max Franz from Austria is taking time off from Dreßen upstairs. But the lead is getting smaller, that could be tight. Now comes the place where Dreßen didn’t drive clean. But Franz also has problems there. It will be very tight. Dreßen stays ahead, 0.52 seconds at the finish.

11:32: At one point, Dreßen left the racing line, the rest looked clean. 1:39:31 is the time in the finish. We’ll see what the time is worth.

11:30: So let’s go. Thomas Dreßen sets out on the route. The slope is in good condition, the external conditions are very good.

11:25: So, let’s get started. Thomas Dreßen sets out in five minutes.

Before the race: We see as many Germans in the top 30. Dreßen has the starting number 1, Josef Ferstl the 14, Romed Baumann the 21, Dominik Schwaiger the 24 and Andreas Sander the 25.

Before the race: At 11:30 a.m., the Kandahar is on its way. Today the route is shortened. The conditions in the past few days were simply not stable enough, the slope too inconsistent.

Before the race: However, there are problems on the driveway from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. An S-Bahn is narrow, train traffic is blocked

Before the race: The departure of the women in Rosa Khutor must be canceled. The Ski World Association FIS recently justified this with the condition of the slopes after the heavy snowfall. The ski racers around the two best Germans, Viktoria Rebensburg and Kira Weidle, had never been able to do any training.

Before the race: Thomas Dreßen will start with the number 1. The piste is in good condition, it has become colder overnight, which makes the route harder and more robust.

Before the race: Hello and welcome to the live ticker at chiemgau24.de for the men’s departure in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It starts here at 11:30 a.m.

Departure in Garmisch: The preliminary report on the race

On the descent on the Kandahar slope, Thomas Dreßen and Josef Ferstl want to cheer again after their failed appearances in Kitzbühel. In the only training session, both showed solid ideas, as did Romed Baumann, who is motivated after his seventh place in Kitzbühel to start his first home race in Garmisch. The veteran only switched from the Austrian to the German association in the summer.
