In a bold move to foster rehabilitation and resocialization, Governor Eduardo Verano of Atlántico is spearheading initiatives aimed at improving the lives of inmates and post-prisoners. Through the “You Can” program, led by the Atlantic Secretariat of the Interior, Verano is delivering tangible support to those seeking a second chance.
During a recent visit to the El Buen Pastor Women’s Rehabilitation Center, the governor fulfilled a promise made on december 24 by delivering 11 televisions to the facility. “With this help, they feel supported. Even if they are here, everyone has the right to build a new life. We have a lot to do to improve thier quality of life,” Verano emphasized.
The initiative has been met with gratitude from both inmates and program coordinators. Orieta González, an inmate at el Buen Pastor, expressed her appreciation, stating, “We thank the governor for always having us present.With these televisions, we will be able to get out of the routine a little and distract ourselves from this environment.”
Marta Nassar, director of the Hogar Azul Foundation, highlighted the collaborative efforts between her association and the Atlantic Government. “we are committed,together with the Government,to providing support for all of their needs. We will be attentive to improving their conditions and motivating them so that, through the ‘You Can’ program, when they leave they can develop ventures that allow them to help their families,” Nassar explained.
The program’s objectives are multifaceted, aiming to reduce criminal recidivism, enhance public safety, promote coexistence based on respect for rights, and strengthen violence prevention. To achieve these goals, participants are offered training in areas such as baking, pastry, food handling, and entrepreneurship. These skills are designed to equip them with the tools needed to develop new productive competencies and reintegrate into society successfully.
Ofelia Díaz, director of the El Buen Pastor prison, underscored the importance of these initiatives. “The delivery of these televisions is a great contribution, since it helps me carry out my resocialization work, allowing them to stay informed and connected with the outside world,” Díaz noted.
This year, the “You Can” program will continue to expand its reach, offering training processes that enable participants to develop entrepreneurship in areas such as baking and crafts. By focusing on skill-building and emotional support, the program is paving the way for a brighter future for Atlántico’s incarcerated population.
