After Colruyt, various retail chains, including Albert Heijn, Carrefour, Delhaize and Lidl, are asking their customers to shop alone as far as possible. “It’s not about an obligation, but about a warm call,” says the supermarkets.

“With this warm appeal to our customers, we are going a step further than the current measures,” says Marc Hofman, COO Retail. “For us, this decision is in line with the rules that already apply in our stores and that everyone – customers and employees – must monitor more strictly. In this way, we want to work with our customers to help prevent the spread of the virus. In addition, we also want to reduce the pressure on our employees. ”
Mandatory take a cart
Colruyt Group emphasizes once again that customers are obliged to take a cart in the stores. “In this way, a distance of 1.5 meters can be kept naturally. The use of trolleys is allowed in smaller shops. Incidentally, the number of carts and trolleys is still limited so that the principle of one customer per ten square meters can be respected ”, it sounds.
The group asks its customers for understanding and counts on their cooperation to implement the new, stricter measures. “We will make our customers extra alert to this via various communication channels, such as posters in the store and social media,” concludes Marc Hofman. “All our measures ultimately have a goal: to put the health of our customers and employees first.”
Not just in the morning or in the evening
Supermarkets Delhaize and Carrefour join Colruyt’s appeal on Wednesday to come shopping alone. Delhaize also asks customers to spread their groceries as much as possible. “If possible, do not all come shopping in the morning or in the evening, but choose times when it is, for example, a bit quieter,” says spokesman Roel Dekelver. “That way we can avoid the crowds and reduce the pressure on the staff.”
At Albert Heijn, the call to shop alone has always been in effect. “We have drawn up rules for safe shopping for a long time, which are on our website and posted in our stores,” says spokeswoman Ann Maes. “We explicitly ask you to come and shop alone and to always take a shopping cart.”
