NEW YORK — The Department of Buildings is investigating the second partial building collapse in the city in one month.
The latest one happened at the corner of Grand and Mulberry streets in Little Italy.
A hole in the wall where the facade collapsed was clearly visible. The collapse knocked over part of a construction fence.
The FDNY said its K-9 unit completed a search of the building and no one was trapped the rubble.
There are several businesses nearby, but investigators said no one reported any injuries.
The impacted building is actually where Alleva dairy shop stood. It was known as one of the oldest cheese shops in the country until it closed last March.
We do know there has been construction happening at the site. The permit for the construction fence, for example, was issued last October.
We don’t know if that construction had anything to do with the collapse.
People in the neighborhood told CBS New York they’re concerned about the strength of the city’s aging buildings, especially after seeing that partial building collapse in the Bronx last month and the parking garage collapse on Ann Street in the spring.
The city is now looking into what caused the Little Italy collapse.
