Fidy Zafy comes from Madagascar, one of the poorest countries in the world. She works at the church welfare station Elz / Glotter in Denzlingen as a geriatric nurse and wound expert.
Help was urgently needed in Madagascar even before the outbreak of the corona pandemic. Now the situation has worsened dramatically. Illness and hunger are part of everyday life in many places.
There is no functioning public health system in Madagascar. Health insurance companies are unknown. That means: every sick person has to pay for the medication they need out of their own pocket. That was very difficult before the Corona crisis, now it is almost impossible. Many civil servants, including civil servants, teachers, etc. have not been paid for months. Many jobs have been lost, and there is no sick pay or unemployment insurance.
The solidarity within families and also among village communities is great – but it is reaching its limits.
Family members who earn their living abroad help and support family and friends. They send money and make it possible to buy food and medicine. They also include nurse Fidy Zafy. She was born and raised in the poorer south of Madagascar. She uses Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends and keeps a close eye on the situation on site.
Fidy Zafy reports: “The supply of food is very difficult. A decent life is no longer possible! We could buy 50 kg of rice for as little as € 30. That secures a family’s food for a month. In addition, oil, sugar, beans, washing powder and medicines are needed for people’s basic needs. “
Mayor Markus Hollemann appeals: “Please donate to the account of the church welfare station Elz / Glotter. Please help to improve the situation of families in southern Madagascar. “
