JAKARTA- President Joko Widodo has responded to the recent polemic surrounding the Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School. Quoted from Antara, Jokowi denied the involvement of courtiers in Islamic boarding schools who were suspected of spreading deviant Islamic teachings.

“I am the Palace? No, no, no no,” said President Jokowi at the Jakarta Palmerah Market on Monday (26/6/2023) quoted from Antara.

President Jokowi made these remarks while answering journalists’ questions about the rumors circulating that President’s Chief of Staff Moeldoko was protecting Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School, despite allegations that the school has been spreading a deviant Islamic religion and is even affiliated with the Islamic State of Indonesia (NII).

The president also urged the public to be patient and wait for the government’s action against the Islamic boarding school.

“Yes, be patient. Mr. Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mr. Minister of Religion, I have ordered to investigate, to explore. Later, when the results are there, I will convey them,” added the President.

The leader of the Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School, Panji Gumilang, has been accused of teaching heretical teachings. Among other things, he has claimed that prayers between male and female congregations can be combined in one line, allowed adultery and sins to be redeemed with money, and even planned to establish a Christian boarding school. Panji Gumilang has also made speeches claiming he belongs to communism.

According to the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), the Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School has been under scrutiny since 2002. The council has revealed controversies related to the school’s doctrinal teachings, institutional affiliation, and religious concepts it promotes.

The government has taken the allegations seriously and has initiated an investigation into the matter. The public is urged to remain patient as the government gathers evidence and conducts a thorough examination of the situation.
