Can you imagine a dental office that charges you for services that were never performed? That’s what a San Diego dentist and his employees, who now face criminal charges for allegedly defrauding the state’s Medi-Cal health program, allegedly did.

The investigation into the case spanned years, revealing possible large-scale fraud. The dentist, Husam Aldairi, and his employees, Rawaa Attar, Lilyan Krikorian, Inci Narin, Laith Alani and Fadi Shammas, are accused of conspiracy to commit a crime and Medi-Cal fraudcrimes that could lead them to spend several years in prison.

The investigation focused on the Aldairi clinics, which had a contract with the Borrego Community Health Foundation, an organization that provides medical care to low-income people. Aldairi’s payment model was based on the number of patient visits, not specific services.

However, it was discovered that Aldairi and his employees allegedly submitted fraudulent invoices for services that were not performed or were presented as performed on multiple days, although in reality they were not performed.. It is estimated that fraudulent invoices exceed $847,000an amount that represents a significant blow to the state health program.

Investigations will continue to determine the full extent of the fraud and ensure public funds are used responsibly.
