Denpasar Implements Wolbachia Technology to Treat Dengue Fever

Denpasar – The Denpasar City Government (Pemkot) immediately implemented wolbachia technology to suppress cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). The Denpasar City Health Office is now continuing to socialize in villages and sub-districts regarding the application of this technology.

“We in Denpasar City have had socialization and approaches since February stakeholder and at this time it is still in the socialization stage in the village (and) the lurah,” said Head of the Denpasar City Health Service Anak Agung Ayu Agung Candrawati during a working visit of Commission IX of the DPR RI, Monday (8/5/2023).

Candrawati revealed that the city of Denpasar was one of the selected ones for implementing Wolbachia technology as an effort to treat DHF. This is because the provincial capital of Bali has experienced the highest dengue cases in Indonesia.

“Around October there will be the spread of mosquitoes with Wolbachia. The hope is that the mosquitoes containing the Wolbachia bacteria can kill the DHF viruses in Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes,” hoped Candrawati.

He explained that the implementation of Wolbachia technology was carried out in five phases. In the first phase, the implementation is still with assistance from abroad. Unfortunately, Candrawati did not mention in detail the foreign parties in question.

Then in the following phases, Candrawati asked for support from the central government to fund the wolbachia technology program. Moreover, this technology is said to be able to reduce dengue cases by up to 77 percent.

“Because of the experience from Yogyakarta yesterday, this innovation can reduce 77 percent of DHF cases in the region. So the hope is that in Denpasar with this innovation it can also reduce it,” he explained.

He hopes that residents will also support the stages of using wolbachia technology. Candrawati also asked for help from the DPR RI Commission IX team so that the wolbachia innovation that will be carried out in Denpasar City is a success.

“Even though in the first phase there was assistance, for the following phases the center can support it,” he said.
