It was a nostalgic surprise in the fifth episode of the 24th SPIRITseason: Dennis Weening, who was also the Mole in Mexico in 2008, lent the Mole a helping hand in this series. But it was close to ruining the game for Anna. After the finale showed how Anna gave Dennis instructions about the key over the telephone and said how much time he had left, it turned out that Dennis had not only spoken to Anna during that assignment…
Babs also got Dennis on the phone. “Hey Anna, it’s Dennis,” he said, without knowing that it wasn’t Anna on the other end of the line at that moment. “Who what?” Babs said. “Who is this?” Dennis asked. “Babs,” came the response, and Dennis quickly hung up. “Oopsie.”
Fortunately for Dennis and Anna, Babs didn’t understand anything Dennis said – and she didn’t even realize it was Dennis. “I heard a man’s voice and thought, huh? I didn’t hear, ‘Is this Anna?’.”
That ended without a hitch, but Dennis’ misstep caused a big shock behind the scenes. “My heart stood still for a moment,” presenter Rik van de Westelaken looked back.
The fact that Anna was de Mol turned out to be a big surprise for all candidates on Saturday evening. Tooske Ragas said before the revelation that she would still want to ‘go to group therapy’ if their main suspect Fons was not De Mol.
