[BLOG] It may be Blue Monday, but at Radio 538 they are in the best mood: something that does not often happen in radio land, a deejay who announces his farewell with a lot of fanfare and still stays is the case: deejay Dennis Ruyer had already done his bit to to work for oldies station JOE, sister of major competitor Qmusic, but still chose to stay with his old childhood love 538. That is striking to say the least, but not entirely unexpected. Why did good old Denman start to have doubts so much? Let’s get it straight…
Provided I even have this information third-hand, so all with the famous blow on the arm. Let’s start with what I distill from everything I hear: where JOE’s programming initially seemed promising, after recruiting Coen and Sander for the morning, the rest of the players turned out to be a nice first division team instead of a Premier League worthy club. All people who were longing for a radio job, had already set up their tent somewhere in the DPG building and who wanted to come and make radio for next to nothing. Dennis must also have thought ‘we’re not going to win the match with this’. Musically, it has also become apparent that every week you will enjoy Abba’s Dancing Queen quite quickly. Add to that: no decent radio studio yet and the chance that such as Talpa the announced lawsuit wins, JOE still has to surrender his air frequencies.
I also hear the story that program leader at JOE Iwan Reuvekamp is already tightening the thumbscrews on his brand new team before the new disc jockey has even started. DPG has cold feet because they also read on social media that people enjoy listening to JOE because of the little talk and a lot of music. So all DJs are probably already being told that a 20-second talk is already too long. Reuvekamp, who is known for his punctual leadership style, and Ruyer: I was unsure from day one whether this would work. And it now turns out that Dennis has thought of that himself. His boyfriend from Inkel also worked with Iwan during his Qmusic days and will undoubtedly have shared some juicy anecdotes with him.
Bringing Edwin Evers back to 538 has also made Dennis have doubts, is what I hear. That is the man who guaranteed the success of 538 for twenty years. He was also the kind of person who announced his farewell grandly, with a smile and a tear, and yet returned to 538, if it hadn’t been about five years in between. Will this immediately push 538 back into the top three? No, not of course, but it is mainly a nice tease in a war between Talpa and DPG. The latter now quickly starts the rumor that Timur Perlin is coming to do something, to lose less face. By the way, I think that Coen and Sander can now start at JOE earlier than May 1, this competition clause will have been used by 538 towards DPG to keep Ruyer in house without legal proceedings.
