Dennis (51) was fired after 20 years

Dennis Peek, 51, from North Carolina, has worked for the American fast food chain Wendy’s for 20 years.

But last week he was fired.

– They said they needed a person who could perform various tasks, which my brother cannot do, Dennis Cona Turner’s sister tells the local TV channel WBTV.

– He couldn’t wait to go to work. She loved working with people and chatting with clients. She broke my heart. He does not understand that he is being treated unfairly, he says of his brother with Down syndrome.

– He doesn’t understand it himself

After the shocking announcement from the 51-year-old’s 21-year-old employer, Turner spoke on Facebook:

“They told me that he was unable to perform the duties of an ‘ordinary’ person (…) I am very disappointed with the management of Wendy’s at Stanley. They have no idea how they are failing my brother, “writes Turner.

He also says that Dennis was looking forward to retiring someday. The plan was to throw a large retirement party with friends and family.

“We now plan to throw a party like that and tell him he’s retired, because he himself doesn’t realize he’s been fired,” Turner writes in the post.

Dennis himself told WBTV that he loved his job at Wendy’s.

– There is a lot of food to eat. It’s good stuff. I love the Baconator, says the 51-year-old, referring to the fast-casual chain’s double cheeseburger with two layers of bacon.

Wendy turned around

Cona Turner’s Facebook post quickly went viral, and Dennis’s firing received media coverage in several American online newspapers, among others. ABC13, Today And TMZ.

Then Wendy’s got cold feet.

On Thursday last week they called from headquarters and said they had no idea that Dennis had been fired from the Stanley branch.

They offered the 51-year-old his job.

– It is good now? No, that’s not fair at all. Should there be consequences? Absolutely. You shouldn’t treat someone like this, Turner tells WBTV.

The TV station has been in contact with the Carolina Restaurant Group, owner of Wendy’s. In a statement, the franchise organization said the dismissal was a violation of company policy.

“We are committed to creating an inviting and inclusive environment for our employees and customers. This was an unfortunate mistake and a violation of protocol. We are in contact with the employee’s family and look forward to welcoming him back to work in the restaurant.” .

He will retire

In a Facebook update, Cona Turner writes that her brother will decline the offer:

“Dennis is not going back to Wendy’s. He’s going to have his BIG RETIREMENT PARTY that he’s been wanting for a long time. Wendy’s offered to pay for her special day. “

At the same time, thank all the messages and all the support that has come from known and unknown people.

“My heart is overwhelmed by the support you have given to my brother and me. Thank you all.”
