The Danish WC adventure is over.

Australia were too strong in the round of 16 in Sydney.

Sam Kerr was replaced when “The Matildas” won 2-0.

Denmark played their first women’s World Cup play-off match for the first time since 1995 – 28 years ago.

And it started promisingly for “De rød-hvide” when Pernille Harder broke free in a couple of counterattacks. But the ending left something to be desired.

Instead, it was home team Australia who took the lead when Mary Fowler found Caitlin Foord with a ball in the deep.

The Arsenal player’s finish between the legs of the goalkeeper and 1-0 to the yellow-clad.

The striker injured his calf before the opener against Ireland and had to play his first World Cup minutes.

– I am happy for her and for the team. Hats off to the medical team and their job. People would only know what they had to put in the last month, says Swedish national team captain Tony Gustavsson in Viaplay.

The match ended 2-0 – now “The Matildas” face either France or Morocco in the quarter-finals.

Which it will be will be decided tomorrow, Tuesday.

For Denmark, it’s playoffs.
