LISBON (AP) — The Denmark women’s soccer team has decided to scrap its participation in the Algarve Cup in Portugal due to an outbreak of COVID-19 in its squad.
The game scheduled for Friday against Sweden was cancelled.
The Danish Football Federation reported that three members of the national team, including coach Lars Søndergaard, tested positive for coronavirus.
The federation added that after discussions with the organizers on Thursday, the decision was made to withdraw from the tournament “in order to protect the health of both players and staff.”
Team doctor Jens Olesen said that “because the majority of the squad had not been infected with the omicron variant before meeting, there is a huge risk that the infection will spread further if we do not withdraw from the tournament now.” .
The federation indicated that the team was going back to Denmark on a chartered flight.
