The “Ask” troll, created by artist Thomas Dambo, was placed in a forest near the Danish city of Hurup, in the far north-west of Jutland.
No one was told the “Ask” position – part of the point was that people find the quiet troll.
However, this created a problem.
Just behind “Ask” is an old cemetery. This leads to conflict between the people of the past and the trolls, a bit like in ancient legends.
The case was first reported by Dansk TV 2.
– Never sure
John Jensen, a spokesman for Åshøj’s friends who were behind the troll project, tells the channel that they had no idea the cemetery was where it was.
– There’s a mound right behind it. It is he who creates problems for us, he says and adds:
– We never knew it was there.
crowd puller
The creation and deployment of “Ask” originally had the blessing of the municipality. The troll – which consists of reused pallets – has been sitting quietly in the small forest since 2020.
During that time, “Ask” was a real magnet for the public.
According to TV 2, over 300,000 guests have stopped by to greet the troll in the past two years.
It will be the end.
100 meters
The Danish Commission for Environmental and Food Complaints requires that the troll be moved, because the burial mounds have a conservation area of 100 meters.
– Since he is made of recycled material, I think an exception could be made for him. It’s crazy they can’t loosen the rules, Jensen tells TV 2.
It has to be divided
Moving “Ask” becomes a complicated process. According to Jensen, the troll has to be carried piece by piece, precisely because it is so big.
– We wanted the biggest. We have that too. But right now it would have been an advantage if it wasn’t that big, since we have to move it, the local fanatic tells the channel.
