December 13 will be very festive in Denmark: for the Lucia Festival (Danish: Luciadag) a somewhat different parade will take place in Copenhagen. By kayak, hundreds of participants then navigate the canals of the capital. A magnificent show every year.
When the parade glides through the city to the Christmas decorations, contemplative moments should not be missing. Therefore, carols are sung in Nyhavn, Christianshavn and Højbro Plads together with spectators lining the waterfront.
The Feast of Lucia has its origins in the memory of the early Christian Saint Lucia. At the same time, December 13 falls on the exact date that marked the shortest day of the year and thus the solstice in Scandinavia before the introduction of the Gregorian calendar.
What else Copenhagen has to offer during Christmas is on the website Visit Copenhagen wonderfully described. What guests should do besides admiring the Lucia Festival parade is, for example, a visit to the HC Andersen Christmas Market. And of course: drink a good amount of Gløgg.
