Two communication cables were damaged in the Baltic Sea in Swedish waters on Sunday and Monday.
The Danish navy said on Wednesday it was tracking the Chinese cargo ship Yi Peng 3, which, according to ship-tracking websites, was floating above the cables around the time of the separation, although there is no immediate indication that she was involved in the events.
European officials have expressed suspicions of sabotage and hybrid warfare in connection with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The ship has been anchored in the narrow Kattegat strait between Sweden and Denmark since Tuesday.
“Denmark does not own the damaged cables and the ship is currently in international waters,” the Danish Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
This limits the possibilities for the Danish authorities to intervene.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has had a number of diplomatic contacts, but cannot provide more specific details,” the statement said.
China’s Foreign Ministry on Monday denied any responsibility in the case.
Sweden and Finland have launched police investigations, which are being supported by the German police.
Swedish police said on Wednesday they were interested in a vessel seen near the cables, but did not name the vessel.
The submarine cable C-Lion 1, which connects Helsinki and the German port of Rostock, broke on Monday south of the Swedish island of Åland.
The Arlion cable that connects the Swedish island of Gotland and Lithuania was also damaged on Sunday.
