Copenhagen, Beritasatu.com– Danish authorities become the first country to remove Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine from the national vaccination program. As Reuters, Monday (3/5/2021), the cancellation of the Covid-19 vaccine is likely related to a rare but serious form of blood clotting.
The move comes after the Nordic country last month stopped using the Astrazeneca vaccine for the same reason.
The country’s health authorities say they have found that the benefits of using the Covid-19 vaccine from Johnson & Johnson do not outweigh the risk of causing possible adverse effects to those who receive the vaccine.
“Excluding the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which accounts for about a third of the total Covid-19 vaccine contract that Denmark has signed, will delay the country’s vaccination calendar by up to four weeks,” he said.
Denmark has gradually reopened its society since early March as infection rates have slowed, including indoor services in restaurants and cafes and allowing football fans into stadiums. Denmark has so far vaccinated 11.5% of its population,
“Taking into account the current situation in Denmark, what is currently missing in our efforts to prevent severe disease from Covid-19 cannot outweigh the risk of causing possible side effects in the form of severe blood clots in those we vaccinate,” said the authorities.
The Danish authorities added that the vaccination rollout was progressing satisfactorily with other available vaccines. On Monday, lawmakers allowed the voluntary use of vaccinations from both Johnson & Johnson and Astrazeneca, lawmaker Liselott Blixt of the Danish People’s Party to Reuters.
The launch of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has also been delayed elsewhere in Europe because of similar blood clotting problems.
On April 20, the European drug regulator, the European Medicines Agency (EMA), said it had found a possible link between the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and a rare blood clotting problem in adults receiving doses in the United States.
