After being hit by protests from many parties, the government Denmark finally considering legally stopping the burning of various holy books, including the Koran, in demonstrations.

The Danish government stated that they had started to consider this option after seeing the trend of extremists using freedom of expression rules in demonstrations to burn Al-Qurans.

The Danish Foreign Ministry said the government wanted to “explore” preventing situations of “other countries, cultures and religions being humiliated, where this situation could have a negative impact on Denmark, including in relation to security.”

“Of course this must be carried out within a constitutional framework that guarantees freedom of opinion and in a way that does not change the fact that freedom of expression in Denmark is broad in scope,” the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement quoted AFPSunday (31/7).

This announcement came after a series of burning Al-Qurans amid demonstrations in Denmark sparked criticism from various countries, including Turkey.

The day before this announcement, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Hakan Fidan, was even reported to have urged Denmark to take firm action to prevent the burning of Al-Qurans which had recently become increasingly frequent.

A source at the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that Fidan expressed this insistence in talks with the Danish Foreign Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmusen, on Saturday (29/7).

In the discussion, Fidan condemned the “continuous evil attack on Al Quran” in the middle of the demonstration.

As reported ReutersFidan also stressed that Turkey could not accept Denmark’s attitude in allowing the burning of the Koran in the middle of a demonstration under the pretext of freedom of expression.

This discussion took place after a group of anti-Islamic activists burned a Koran in front of the Egyptian and Turkish embassies in Copenhagen last Tuesday.

Similar actions have also taken place in a number of previous demonstrations at several points in Denmark and Sweden in recent weeks.

The burning of Al Quran has been on the rise since the beginning of this year. However, Sweden and Denmark claim they cannot prevent the burning of the Koran in the midst of a demonstration because they are bound by regulations regarding freedom of speech.
