Before the last group stage matches, all teams in group D had the opportunity to advance to a round of 16 final. Denmark was second in the group, but a win against World Cup debutants Haiti would be required to secure the eighth place.
Already in the fourth minute of the match, the Danes struck through defender Simone Boye Sørensen. The goal was ruled offside and the dream of eighth was alive for Haiti.
But then Denmark’s team captain Pernille Harder would score her first goal in the championship when she made it 1-0 on a penalty in the 21st minute of the match.
All Nordic teams on
Harder struck again at the end of the second half when she headed the ball into an open goal. The goal was also ruled out after VAR review when the referee considered that Haiti should have had a free kick in the situation before the goal came.
But the Danes would get a second ball into the goal. In added time, Sanne Troelsgaard completed the saga and scored 2–0 for Denmark, which was also the final score of the match. With the win, Denmark finished second in the group and will face host nation Australia in the round of 16 on Monday.
This is the first time since 1995 that Denmark has made it past the group stage of a women’s World Cup.
With the Danes now advancing further, all the Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden and Denmark) have secured a place in the eighth.
England dominated
England, too, needed a win, against China, to advance to the round of 16, even though they were ranked fourth in the group before the meeting. But the English showed proof of total dominance and won the match by a whopping 6–1. This means that the English finished as group D in Group D and now Nigeria awaits in the round of 16 on Monday.
