It was not just such an ordinary fight, at least not for a Slovak football fan. A match between the Czech champion AC Sparta Prague a FC Copenhagen culminated on Tuesday in the return match of the 3rd preliminary round of the Champions League and brought really huge drama.

Up to six goals were scored and in the end they had to decide on penalties, which the guests from Denmark were looking forward to. The happier of the Slovak couple Lukáš Haraslín Denis Vavro was the second named to come a long way to a second consecutive Champions League group stage appearance.

“It means we might not play in the Conference League,” laughed the 27-year-old native of Partizánske after the winning match, who emphasized that the goal for his club is participation in the group stage of the Champions League. Just like last season, “that’s the only thing we’re after. We want to play it for the second time in a row.”

However, it will not be easy, because an obstacle awaits FC Copenhagen in the form of the Polish champion Rakow Czestochowa, who writes a great story in his club history with a successful run. And Vavro is well aware that it will be a difficult opponent.

“We will fight as before. I probably know what kind of opponent it is, because I also follow the Polish league. It’s a nasty team. We will see. Before the game it will be 50:50 and we will see how the first duel we play outside will end. I believe we will end it at home and advance to the Champions League group,” he wishes.

A well-deserved promotion, but bumped ribs

While in the first match both teams parted after a goalless draw, the exact opposite happened in the second leg. Almost 20,000 spectators at Letná (epet Arena) saw up to six goals and a penalty shootout with a happy ending for FC Copenhagen. According to Vavro, his team deservedly advanced: “I think we were better and more dominant in the first game and now it was more balanced. The promotion was well-deserved.”

Tuesday’s match ended prematurely for the Slovakian national team defender, as he left the field in the 55th minute when he was replaced by Boilessen. “I’m not breathing well and I’m a little bit after one fight, so we’ll see how the control will be,” he told ŠPORT.sk. Vavro allegedly bumped his ribs in one fight, but it shouldn’t be anything serious. “I didn’t want to take unnecessary risks and make a mistake just because I was in pain,” explained his early end in the match.

The next event on the pitch, when Sparta was able to equalize and even take the lead twice in overtime, was difficult for him. He only watched it from outside the field and could not help his teammates in any way. “It was hard to watch. Especially when we kept losing. After that, we were just catching up, but our strength and character of the team showed. Even last season, we were able to turn around matches in the domestic league, which we managed to do now as well. The goalkeeper kept us in penalties, our boys scored beautiful goals and the promotion was more or less deserved.” states Vavro.

He will enjoy Haraslína during the national team

Tuesday’s fight was definitely special for Denis Vavro, because during his stay on the field he came into confrontation with his national team teammate Lukáš Haraslín from Sparta Prague several times. In the 34th minute, he skilfully passed through him and rushed at the goalkeeper, who, however, neutralized his attempt. In the end, Vavro was happy anyway.

“He passed through me,” admitted the Copenhagen stopper and counterattacked: “in the first match, I more or less did not see him on the field. He said that he would score a goal for us today, as far as I know, and he didn’t score that goal. Then he substituted, so 1:0 for me,” rejoiced Vavro, who is already looking forward to playing with his teammate from the national team during the upcoming September clash: “There will be time for that when I pick him up on the rep.”

Just a 17-year-old sensation from Kuwait

Only the 17-year-old shone at the very end of the rematch Roony Bardghji, who decided Copenhagen’s progress to the Champions League playoffs with a very confident “doll”. Although even after his arrival on the field in the 108th minute, he showed that the young Kuwaiti is growing into a very interesting player for the future.

“That he is only seventeen years old and allows himself to do something like this, I can only say that, as they say in Czech, ‘he has balls’. I expected him to deal with it differently, but he did it as he did and we’re moving on.” laughed Denis Vavro.

He started to enjoy football again like when he was young

Denis Vavro has been a part of FC Copenhagen since January 2022, when he returned after an unsuccessful engagement in Italian Lazio Rome. The club from the “eternal city” did not suit him at all, but the same cannot be said about Copenhagen. For the former player of MŠK Žilina, “Levi” is like a promised club.

It was from Copenhagen that he won a transfer to the famous Lazio, and after returning to the north of Europe, he is again in a good mood and enjoying football. Soon, he may play the group of the prestigious Champions League for the second time in a row, and that already proves something.

“A year and a half ago, I didn’t even know what football was. I’m back and happy again. I am playing in the national team again. I’m starting to enjoy it again, like when I was young and just starting out. In short, I’m enjoying it because you never know if it’s your last match. We see what the injuries are now and that’s why I’m enjoying it because you never know what can happen.” Denis Vavro, one of FC Copenhagen’s busiest players, added at the end for ŠPORT.sk.
