“Denial” today in the live stream and TV: That’s what the film by Mick Jackson is about
The defamation trial that British historian and Holocaust denier David Irving instigated against American professor Deborah E. Lipstadt lasted four years, from 1996 to 2000. The result was a memorable victory for freedom of expression and justice against historical falsification and fanaticism. Director Mick Jackson and award-winning screenwriter and playwright David Hare turned the explosive case into high-quality, engaging drama with outstanding performances from leading actors Rachel Weisz, Timothy Spall and Tom Wilkinson. Deborah Lipstadt (Rachel Weisz), professor of contemporary Jewish history at Emory University in Atlanta, is confronted with explosive legal proceedings: In one of her publications, she accused the British historian David Irving (Timothy Spall) of lying because he vehemently refused to to recognize the Holocaust perpetrated by the National Socialists during World War II as a historical fact. Irving countered this provocation in his own way: He is suing Lipstadt for defamation and inciting a defamation trial, in which the defendant is obliged under British criminal law to prove her point of view. For the American professor, this means in plain language that she has to provide factual evidence of the historical verifiability of the extermination of the Jews. Under the pressure of the burden of proof, Lipstadt hires an experienced defense team led by the inscrutable but well-versed lawyer Richard Rampton (Tom Wilkinson), whose idiosyncratic approach to the difficult case is not always well received by his client. Rampton and his colleagues try with all the means at their disposal to overrule Irving’s main arguments, while the unwelcome legal spectacle develops a controversially discussed momentum of its own. This program is available in the ARD media center for seven days after it has been broadcast.
