The Government of Salta estimates that it will apply the first doses of the dengue vaccine before the end of the year, through an immunization strategy that will begin in the north of the province, in the departments of Orán, San Martín and Rivadavia, it was reported.

“This season is going to be worse than the previous one, but we can say that Salta is the first Argentine province that has a public strategy to vaccinate against dengue,” said the Minister of Public Health, Federico Mangione.

The official gave a press conference this Tuesday, in which he gave details of the decision adopted by the Government of Salta, acquire 300 thousand doses of the dengue vaccine and anticipated that it will begin to be applied before the end of the year.

“The doses that the province purchased have to come from Germany, in the meantime we have already designed the strategy to vaccinate the population that lives in the highest risk places,” Mangiones said.

The minister confirmed that 300 thousand doses of the quadrivalent vaccinethat is protects against all four serotypes of the dengue virus, for immunize 150 thousand people, since the vaccination schedule consists of two doses, with an interval of three months between each other.

“We are going to start vaccinating in the north, where historically the greatest number of cases occur,” said the official, who added that “the vaccine is going to help, but it is not the definitive solution, but rather part of the fight in which everyone “The community must get involved, because we have to combat mosquitoes by scrapping all year round and not just during the rainy season.”

In this sense, he considered that “dengue will not end if there is no social awareness,” and noted that “Governor Gustavo Sáenz made the decision to buy the vaccines, because we already had an early case of dengue type 2 in Tartagal.” .

“These vaccines are approved by Anmat and the legal framework is in place to introduce them,” Mangione stated.

The general director of Epidemiological Coordination, Francisco García Campos, participated in the press conference; and the head of the Immunization program, Adriana Jure, who gave details of the way in which dengue vaccines will be applied, according to the epidemiological analyzes carried out.

In a first stagethe doses will be allocated to the departments of Orán, San Martín and Rivadavia, and then, they will move forward with Anta and General Güemes.

Las people to vaccinate are those understood between 25 and 39 years oldaccording to studies carried out on the incidence rates of the disease, regardless of whether or not they have had any type of dengue.

The administration of the vaccine will be subcutaneouslypreferably in the upper part of the arm, and it is a quadrivalent vaccine, brand Qdenga, from the Takeda laboratory, suitable for immunizing against dengue type 1, 2, 3 and 4.

It is not indicated for pregnant womenbreastfeeding women, nor for immunocompromised people, and the immunization effect lasts five years.

This vaccine has been approved in Indonesia, the European Union, the United Kingdom and Brazil, and presents 19 clinical studies carried out in different centers in 13 countries.

The application of the vaccine can produce some mild reactions to moderate, which can last from one to three days.

Los first cases of dengue type 2 were registered in Tartagal, in 1997and the circulation of the four serotypes of the disease is currently being verified, detailed Francisco García Campos.

To define the vaccination strategy, The General Directorate of Epidemiological Coordination and the Immunization Program of the Ministry of Public Health carried out a comprehensive study on the incidence rates of the disease, behavioral curves, hospitalization rates and the age groups of the affected people.

From this analysis arose the immunization proposal that will be applied in the province through nurses and health agents from the operational areas, who are already receiving the relevant training.

“Like any vaccine, this one also reduces severe forms of illness, hospitalizations and deaths,” explained Jure, who added that the doses will be distributed gradually, in the highest-risk departments.

The official said that “it has a proven effectiveness of more than 80% and reduces cases requiring hospitalization by more than 90%.
