DENGUE: the virus continues to spread across the country

The estimated cumulative number of clinically suggestive cases of dengue seen in general practice in the past four weeks is 1,335 cases. In week 2020-27 (from June 29 to July 5, 2020), the weekly number of cases (345 cases) is among the highest since the first thresholds were exceeded in November 2019, that of the week of June 22 to 28, 2020 reaching 410 cases. It is still above seasonal values for the period. Between November 4, 2019 and July 5, 2020, the estimated cumulative number of clinically suggestive cases of dengue fever is 6,800 cases.

In the past four weeks, biologically confirmed cases of dengue have spread to 30 of the 34 municipalities in Martinique. Until then, the highest incidences were more observed in the South of Martinique where 3 communes continue to report incidences higher than 10 cases for 10 000 inhabitants (Le Diamant, Sainte-Anne and Les Trois-Ilets). However, it is now the northern and central municipalities of Martinique that seem to be the most affected since 11 municipalities have incidences of more than 10 cases per 10,000 inhabitants.

Finally, the Far North of Martinique seems for this period relatively little impacted. Four municipalities have no cases: Le Prêcheur, Grand-Rivière, Macouba and Fonds Saint-Denis.

In week 2020-27, the weekly number of biologically confirmed cases appears to be decreasing. However, this trend, contrary to that of the other indicators, would rather reflect the decrease in the number of diagnostic tests performed. In fact, during an epidemic, the diagnostic strategy does not recommend systematic diagnostic research. In total, since November 4, 2019, 2,055 biologically confirmed cases have been notified, 28% of which are under 18 years of age. The average age of the patients was 36 years.

Six serious indigenous cases of dengue fever were hospitalized in an intensive care or intensive care unit. Two of these 6 cases died (February and June 2020) and classified as being directly linked to dengue. A third death, classified as indirectly linked to dengue fever, occurred on the day of his hospital admission (end of June 2020)
