Dengue: people died of the virus in Reunion

Dengue fever continues to gain ground in Reunion. Three new deaths are linked to this epidemic, bringing the number of deaths from dengue fever to 4 since the epidemic began on the island. Vigilance is more than ever necessary in this particular health context.

The dengue epidemic has claimed 3 lives, bringing the number of people killed by the virus actively circulating on the island to 4. According to the Regional Health Agency, these victims were already weakened by associated pathologies.

Severe forms increase

The ARS director of surveillance and health security, Dr François Chieze, is worried about the increase in hospitalizations and emergency visits in recent weeks.

“We are in a situation where, from the moment we present comorbidities such as lung disease, heart disease, obesity and diabetes, there is a sensitivity which is much greater at the risk of developing serious forms of the disease” , he explains.

A quarter of deaths are linked to the association of the dengue virus and the underlying disease.

Dengue and coronavirus at the same time

Dengue fever and Covid-19, which have different routes of transmission, have co-infected no one on the island.

“What we can say is that when you develop a form of dengue, you have a weakened immunity. As this immunity is weakened, the risk of developing a severe form of Covid-19 is increased “, says DR François Chieze.
