Dengue is still there

Dengue still rode in Guadeloupe. But in Martinique, the situation is even more complicated.

A slight decrease in the estimated number of clinically suggestive cases of dengue seen in city medicine is observed last week with 130 cases estimated against 160 cases on average over the last six weeks, indicates the last epidemiological point. Since the beginning of May, the number of new cases has fluctuated between 120 and 180 weekly cases. These values, although above the seasonal threshold, are 2 to 3 times lower than those observed in the 1st quarter. Since the start of the epidemic (October), 9,010 clinically suggestive cases of dengue fever have been estimated in general practice. In the past four weeks, the estimated number of clinically suggestive cases of dengue having consulted a general practitioner is 610. The municipalities with the highest cumulative incidence – with between 40 and 100 cases estimated per 10,000 inhabitants – are Saint-François and Vieux-Habitants. The municipalities of Petit Bourg, Le Gosier, Bouillante and Baie-Mahault have an incidence of between 20 and 40 cases per 10,000 inhabitants. Eleven out of the 32 municipalities in the archipelago report no clinically suggestive case of dengue.
Since the start of the epidemic, 388 emergency room visits have been identified, of which 85 (21.9%) required hospitalization. The majority serotype is DENV-2 (91%). The DENV-1 (6%) and DENV-3 (3%) serotypes are also circulating. No serious form has been reported by an intensive care or intensive care unit.

It sucks in Martinique

In Saint Martin, the situation is stable. In Saint-Barthélémy, on the other hand, the high number of consultations for dengue fever, observed since the beginning of May, continues in the last three weeks with 23, 24 and 29 cases clinically suggestive, respectively. Since December, the dengue activity in city medicine has intensified with a total of 477 cases clinically suggestive of dengue who consulted a general practitioner.
Finally in Martinique, the situation is really complicated. From June 15 to 21, the weekly number of cases (317 cases) reached its highest level ever recorded since the first thresholds were exceeded in November 2019. It remains much higher than the seasonal values for the period. Between November 4 and June 21, the cumulative estimated number of clinically suggestive cases of dengue fever was 6,070. Six serious native cases of dengue fever were hospitalized in an intensive care or intensive care unit. Two of these 6 cases died (February and June) and classified as being directly linked to dengue.

Three serotypes circulate in Martinique. A predominant co-circulation of the DENV-3 (82%) and DENV-2 (17%) serotypes was characterized out of a total of 335 samples. Since the end of May, 4 DENV-1 have also been identified by the virology laboratory of the CHUM.
