“Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever: Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention in North Sumatra”

DHF can be cured but can be fatal if treatment is delayed. Get to the doctor immediately.

Medan (ANTARA) – The North Sumatra Health Office asked the public to be wary of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) by immediately seeing a doctor if they have a fever.

“North Sumatra is a dengue endemic area. Therefore, if you have a fever, one of the possibilities is dengue fever,” said the Head of the North Sumatra Health Service, doctor Alwi Mujahit Hasibuan in Medan, Thursday.

Alwi feels the need to keep reminding him about this because in some cases, people only see a doctor when the symptoms of fever or DHF are severe.

DHF can be cured but can be fatal if treatment is delayed. Get to the doctor immediately.

“Don’t get into the ‘dengue shock syndrome’ or DSS phase. If that’s the case, it’s difficult,” said Alwi.

According to the Ministry of Health, DSS is a situation where a DHF sufferer experiences shock or shock. It happens because of a disturbance in blood circulation.

In North Sumatra, from 2018 to 2022, DHF sufferers are dominated by those in the age group 5-14 years and 15-44 years. However, the highest death rate on average occurs in the age range of 5-14 years.

This made Alwi encourage parents to pay attention to the health of their children. When it shows symptoms, especially fever, the child is advised to immediately seek treatment and check his blood.

“Currently, DHF can be handled by puskesmas. Therefore, with earlier anticipation, the DHF fatality rate can be reduced,” said Alwi.

DHF, he continued, is prone to occur during seasonal transitions which give rise to many breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, both Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. They are also more fertile and multiply faster.

Cases will be higher if the mosquitoes roam in densely populated areas.

“The population-prone areas spread dengue cases more quickly,” said Alwi.
