Dengue Fever Outbreak in Castiglione d’Adda: Prevention Measures and Screening Information

There are eight cases of dengue fever registered in the small town of Castiglione d’Adda, in the province of Lodi. Of the approximately 4,500 inhabitants, 336 have undergone screening for the search for antibodies to the virus transmitted by the Zanzara Aedes (tiger mosquito), at the Codogno community house. These cases are “autochthonous”, i.e. not associated with a traveler returning from a country where dengue is endemic. None of the eight people developed severe symptoms of the disease.

Dengue, explains the Ministry of Health, is a disease caused by four very similar viruses transmitted to humans by mosquito bites who, in turn, stung an infected person. So it doesn’t exist direct contagion between humans, even if humans are the main host of the virus.

The test can also be done tomorrow, Saturday 2nd Septemberfrom 9 to 13 and then next week from Monday 4 to Friday 8 Septemberfrom 8 to 10. All information is available on website of the Agency for the protection of health (Ats).

Citizens of Castiglione d’Adda who want to participate in the screening but cannot reach Codogno for physical impediments they can contact by telephone the Single point of access (Pua) of the Community House at number 0377/465352 and book the home collection.

Remember that, to limit the spread of mosquitoes, it is useful to adopt the following precautions: cover all the containers used for rainwater harvesting from irrigation (tanks, buckets, watering cans, bins and basins), hold clean manholes and wells applying mosquito nets to prevent eggs from being laid, treating them every 15 days with larvicidal products, checking that the gutters are clean and unobstructed, in cemeteries introduce larvicidal in vases of fresh flowers or replace them with dried or plastic flowers, do not let water stagnate in the saucers (eliminate them, if possible), change the water daily and carefully wash the water troughs of the animals.
