Dengue Fever Outbreak in Burkina Faso: Deadliest Case in Recent Years

The Ministry of Health in Burkina Faso has declared Dengue fever endemic, as the country faces the deadliest outbreak of the disease in recent years. So far, 200 deaths caused by it have been confirmed, against the background of a massive increase in the number of cases of illness. According to the ministry, more than 1,500 cases of Dengue fever have been registered this year, 20% of which occurred in the last week alone. The mosquito-borne disease kills about 20,000 people worldwide each year, and the number of illnesses has risen steadily over the past few decades. Scientists blame climate change and urbanization, and the WHO warned earlier this month that the disease could become a significant threat in parts of Africa./opopescu/csimion
