Dengue fever in Reunion Island: the virus continues to circulate despite a decrease in cases

From August 9 to 15, 75 cases of dengue were confirmed (compared to 117 the previous week after data consolidation). The decline in the number of cases continues in the majority of municipalities. However, despite the southern winter, the circulation of the virus continues in the island and remains significant compared to previous years at the same period.

The western sector remains the most affected, particularly the town of Saint-Paul with 30% of cases recorded in the region. In addition, a slight increase in cases is observed in the South.

In order to further curb the epidemic and protect themselves from severe forms of the disease, the population and those involved in the fight against dengue are encouraged to continue individual and collective protection measures: apply repellents to protect themselves from bites of mosquitoes, eliminate anything that may contain water (breeding grounds), consult your doctor in case of symptoms.

Since January 1, 2021

• 29,553 confirmed cases

• 948 hospitalizations

• 4,054 emergency visits

• 19 deaths directly linked to dengue

Over the last two weeks, the confirmed cases are distributed in all the municipalities, with the exception of Sainte-Rose, Cilaos, Salazie and La Plaine des Palmistes.

The number of cases is falling on the island except in Tampon, Etang Salé, Petite Ile and Sainte-Suzanne with around ten cases reported per week.

• The western sector is mainly concerned: 30% of cases are located in Saint-Paul and cases are recorded in other municipalities

• In the South, Saint-Pierre is mainly concerned. Cases are also recorded in Saint-Joseph, Le Tampon and L’Etang Salé.

• All the municipalities in the North report cases.

• In the east, the drop in cases concerns all municipalities.

In addition, clusters of cases (outbreaks of dengue fever) have been identified in the following neighborhoods:

WEST REGION

• Saint-Paul (Roquefeuil, Plateau Caillou, la Plaine, la Saline les bains)

• Possession (Cap Noir)

REGION SUD

• Saint-Pierre (Bois d’Olives)

• Etang Salé (Etang Salé les bains)

Recommendations to fight against dengue

It only takes one mosquito bite to get dengue.

Health authorities recommend that the population:

• Protect yourself against mosquito bites, including during the 7 days following the onset of symptoms to protect those around you.

Continue to protect yourself, even if you have been sick with dengue previously; several dengue serotypes can circulate and infection with one serotype does not protect against attack by another serotype.

• Eliminate the breeding grounds (mosquito nests): empty anything that may contain water all around your home, check the gutters, etc.

• Consult a doctor in the event of symptoms: fever, headache, muscle / joint pain, nausea, vomiting, etc. and take the sample in a medical analysis laboratory prescribed by your doctor to confirm the diagnosis of dengue fever.

• If you are sick with dengue fever:

o Continue to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

In order to prevent severe forms of dengue fever:

  • Monitor your state of health, especially between the 4th and 8th day of illness
  • Consult your doctor or emergency department if you have the following signs and symptoms: severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, inability to eat / hydrate, extreme fatigue, restlessness.
  • Consult an ophthalmologist or the emergency department of the CHU Nord without delay, in the event of ophthalmological complications (severe and sudden loss of vision) occurring approximately 8 days after the onset of signs of dengue
  • Go to the hospital in case of deterioration of your state of health

The severe forms of dengue affect all ages: infants, children, adults and the elderly.

They occur both in healthy people and in people with pathologies.

Children under two years of age, whose parents think they might have dengue, should preferably be cared for in a hospital setting.

Since dengue is likely to damage the liver, it is recommended to strictly follow the recommendations of your doctor on taking paracetamol.
