Worldwide, the number of cases of dengue fever has increased tenfold in twenty years, from 500,000 to more than 5 million. This year, 5,000 people died from dengue fever. In 2023, 82 local cases were reported in Italy, 43 in France and 3 in Spain. One person died as a result of his infection. More than 80 percent of all cases were recorded in North and South America.
In January, the WHO warned that dengue, a disease transmitted by mosquitoes, is spreading rapidly and that a pandemic may be looming. There are vaccines against the disease, but once someone has contracted the virus, there is no specific treatment. In the majority of people the infection is mild, but in ten percent of cases it develops into serious complications.
There are currently small populations of tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus) and yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) in Southern Europe. Their eggs can survive the winter, after which the larvae hatch when the weather warms.
