Dengue fever but does not break

The dengue epidemic appears to be on the decline. However, the number of cases remains above the epidemic thresholds.

A decrease in the estimated number of clinically suggestive cases of dengue seen in city medicine has been observed since the beginning of April, indicates Public Health France in its last epidemiological point. Nearly 115 cases were estimated last week (week 18), a decrease of -70%. This value is still higher than the value of the seasonal threshold. Since the start of the epidemic (mid-October), nearly 7,900 estimated clinically suggestive cases of dengue fever have been seen in city medicine.

In the past four weeks, almost 550 clinically suggestive cases have consulted a general practitioner. The municipalities most affected – that is to say those with the highest cumulative incidence – remain Petit Bourg, Le Gosier and Saint-François. The communes of Désirade, Sainte-Rose, Bouillante and Pointe-à-Pitre have incidences of between two and four cases per 1,000 inhabitants, while the eight communes of Basse-Terre, Vieux-Habitants, Capesterre-Belle-Eau, Petit-Canal, Morne-à-L’eau, Le Moule and Les Saintes have incidences of the order of one to two cases per 1,000 inhabitants. Eleven of the 32 municipalities in the archipelago report no clinically suggestive case.

No serious form

Nine emergency department visits for suspected dengue fever were reported last week compared to 12 the week before. Since the beginning of April, 28 emergency visits for suspected dengue fever have been recorded, 8 of which required hospitalization. There has also been a decrease in the number of emergency department visits for all causes. Since the start of the epidemic, 339 emergency room visits have been identified, 73 (21%) of which were followed by hospitalization. The share of children under 15 is 48%. No serious form has been reported by an intensive care or intensive care unit.

In Saint Martin, the epidemic is stable. Surveillance indicators remain high, with an increase in the number of biologically confirmed cases and the number of emergency visits for dengue fever observed over the past two weeks.

Finally in Saint-Barthélémy, there is an upsurge in biologically confirmed cases. The dengue surveillance indicators show an active circulation of the virus on the territory. Since December, a total of 261 clinically suggestive cases of dengue have consulted a general practitioner, 20% of which in the past two weeks.
