Batu City, Bhirawa.

Not everyone infected with the dengue virus will show severe dengue manifestations. There are those who only manifest a mild fever which will get better on its own, or there are even those who have no symptoms at all (asymptomatic). For this reason, the Batu City Government through the Health Service (Dinkes) invites residents to be more alert to the dengue virus.

Head of Disease Prevention and Control at the Batu City Health Office, Dr. Susanna Indahwati, said the dengue virus that infects humans can cause dengue infection. And dengue infection is a group of diseases in humans which includes several diseases.

“There is Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DBD), Dengue Fever (DD), Expanded Dengue Syndrome (EDS) which is generally known as Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS),” said Susanna, Friday (8/3).

Others, he continued, have sufferers who only suffer from dengue fever. In this phase it does not cause plasma leakage and result in death. However, the public is advised to be alert to the dangers of the dengue virus.

Susanna explained that in conditions of high rainfall, the number of dengue fever cases tends to increase. Likewise, when the intensity of rainfall is low, the number of dengue fever cases tends to be low.

High rainfall intensity will result in an increase in standing water as a breeding place for mosquitoes. And the adult mosquito population increases, and dengue transmission increases. “The vectors for dengue fever transmission are Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus,” explained Susanna.

Citizen vigilance is urgent and important because until now there is no specific medicine or vaccine for dengue fever. However, if the patient seeks treatment early and receives adequate management.

The main symptoms of DHF are fever for 2-7 days accompanied by manifestations of bleeding, decreased platelets (thrombocytopenia), hemoconcentration which is characterized by plasma leakage, namely increased hematocrit, ascites, pleural effusion, hypoalbuminemia).

Dengue infection can be accompanied by non-specific symptoms such as headache, muscle and bone pain, skin rashes or pain behind the eyeballs.

Reducing the dengue mortality rate requires a well-organized process from the initial diagnosis to the referral stage. This can be achieved by increasing public awareness and understanding of the importance of bringing dengue fever patients to health service facilities.

In history, identifying DD/DHF can be done by counting the days of fever. In general, after the incubation period, sufferers will experience 3 phases of the disease.

As of today, (March 8 2024) in Batu City there have been 85 cases of DD, 84 cases of DHF and 7 cases of EDS. The most cases were in Batu District, especially in Temas District with 18 DD, 26 DBD and 4 EDS.

Based on the number of cases and the results of coordination with Temas Village and the local community, today (8/3), the Batu City Health Office carried out fogging activities at the locus in the RW 7 area. (nas)
