Demonstrations, rioting and looting in New York City

“I can’t breathe”, “Silence is violence”, “Enough is enough” and “Black Lives Matter”. It’s on the posters, signs and barricades that you see in the streets and squares of New York at the moment. Since the death of George Floyd last week, the city has held daily demonstrations and protests against racism and police violence. On Sunday and the following nights, the demonstrations, which had been largely peaceful, were overshadowed by countless violent riots. Cars burned, shop windows were smashed, shops in various parts of the city were looted. There were repeated violent clashes between demonstrators, looters and police in both Manhattan and Brooklyn.
